Satyapragyan 35th, Padmini 87th in Dubai Open

Orissa IM Swayangsu Satyapragyan finished 35th, garnering 5.5 points in the 12th Dubai Open Chess Tournament in Dubai yesterday. In the ninth and final round, he defeated Azerbaijan Woman Grandmaster Zeinab Mamedzarova to register his third win. Earlier, Satyapragyan held five Grandmasters to draws before losing to Armenian GM Tigran Petrosian in the eighth round.

WIM Padmini Rout, the second Orissa player in the fray, lost to Ireland Fide Master Afshari Mohammadreza to finish 87th with four points. Overall, Padmini won three games, drew two and lost the remaining four. As many as eight Grandmasters tied for the top spot with seven points each. Eventually, Eduardo Iturrizaga of Venezuela clinched the title, via Buchholz tie-break rule. Among 28 Indians in the fray, Grandmaster R R Laxman was most successful, occupying the 20th position with six points.
